Father of Pistorius's girlfriend speaks out
JOHANNESBURG (AP) ? The father of Oscar Pistorius' slain girlfriend has told a South African newspaper that the athlete will have to "live with his conscience" if he is lying about how he killed her.
In its Saturday edition, the Afrikaans-language Beeld newspaper quotes Barry Steenkamp as saying Pistorius will "suffer" alone if his assertion that he accidentally shot 29-year-old Reeva Steenkamp is false.
Barry Steenkamp says he might be able to forgive Pistorius one day if the double-amputee Olympian is telling the truth.
Pistorius was released on bail on Friday. He is charged with premeditated murder in the Valentine's Day slaying of his girlfriend.

Southeast Asian margin squeeze snags Singapore Inc
Feb 25 (Reuters) - The most widespread margin squeeze in at
least a decade is pushing some Singapore companies out of the
city state as rising costs and slow growth sap profitability.
A Reuters study of 268 listed Singapore companies showed
that 57 percent reported a year-on-year drop in operating profit
margin for the first three quarters of 2012. That was the
biggest percentage for the nine-month period on record,
according to Thomson Reuters data going back to 2002. Full-year
data for 2012 was not yet available.
A severe labour shortage is hobbling businesses in Singapore
as the government tightens its immigration policies, while
growth has been hard to come by as exports languish in a dull
global economy.
Across Southeast Asia, 54 percent of companies reported
shrinking margins, equalling the percentage recorded in 2009,
when the global economy had tipped into a recession following
the Lehman Brothers bankruptcy.
In all, Reuters examined the balance sheets of nearly 1,000
companies in Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and the
Philippines with a market value of at least S$100 million ($80.8
million).
The pain is particularly acute in Singapore, a smaller and
more mature market lacking the burgeoning consumer classes of
its emerging market neighbours. Inflation has heated up, with
the consumer price index, due on Monday, expected to show a 4.0
percent rise in January, according to a Reuters poll.
The head of a Singapore business association is among those
moving their corporate headquarters elsewhere, in search of
lower costs and a larger market.
Chan Chong Beng, head of the Association of Small and Medium
Enterprises in Singapore and chairman of Goodrich Global, a
carpet and wallcoverings company with a presence in eight
countries, said he planned to move his firm's headquarters and
operations such as product development to Wujiang, China, near
Shanghai. Sales and marketing will stay in Singapore, he said.
"Businesses today face a very awkward situation," Chan said.
"The worst is we can't find the workers."
"Potentially there's a lot of room to grow in China. Over
here, no matter how much I can push, there's a limit to my
growth," he added.
PACKING UP
Singapore, a major financial and trading centre known for
its business-friendly policies, faces a tightening labour market
as authorities curb the influx of foreign workers, spurred by
public grumbling about overcrowding and soaring property prices.
A survey conducted late last year by the American Chamber of
Commerce in Singapore found 15 percent of respondents - U.S.
businesses which are members of the chamber - were considering
moving operations away, while 5 percent had already done so.
Andrew Tjioe, president of the Restaurant Association of
Singapore which has more than 300 members, said the pressure
from rising costs and a shortage of labour was unprecedented.
"I have gone through so many rounds of recessions - the 1997
recession, SARS and then 2008," said Tjioe, who has been in the
food and beverage industry for three decades. "I can feel the
pressure right now. I believe this has got to be the worst."
At Chan's Goodrich Global, sales growth in Singapore has
been slow in the past two or three years while rents have shot
up around 30 percent and labour costs have risen as much as 20
percent.
Small and medium-sized businesses like Chan's have been
among the hardest hit. These companies collectively contribute
more than half of Singapore's gross domestic product and employ
seven out of every 10 workers.
Last month, the American Chamber of Commerce in Singapore
and eight other business organisations sent a joint letter to
the city state's government highlighting concerns about tighter
limits on foreign workers.
"While Singapore continues to attract significant foreign
investment we nevertheless fear current implementation of
revised labour policy risks negatively impacting Singapore's
economy and reputation as an open economy," the letter said.
Singapore's Economic Development Board has acknowledged the
impact of tighter immigration measures on industry and has taken
steps including helping companies to boost productivity, the
board's managing director Yeoh Keat Chuan said.
Some companies will be reluctant to move completely out of
Singapore, which offers a strong record in safety, regulation
and transparency, although their expansion efforts will likely
focus on neighbouring countries with faster growth.
That expansion can help them to weather some of the
pressures at home.
Electronics and furniture retailer Courts Asia Ltd
, which has 72 stores in Singapore and Malaysia, is
setting up a 140,000 square-foot (13,000 square-metre) megastore
in eastern Jakarta, which will be the group's largest when it
opens in 2014.
"We don't want to discount Singapore in terms of growth
potential," said Courts Asia Chief Executive Terry O'Connor.
"But of course Indonesia and Malaysia have more greenfield
territories, there are more options. We go to Indonesia, we can
be 'big box' from day one."
Singapore bakery and restaurant chain BreadTalk Group Ltd
, which aims to boost revenue to S$1 billion in the
next few years, is expanding regionally - particularly in China
and Thailand - to balance out cost pressures at home.
"In Singapore's retail environment, rising costs are largely
attributed to rent and labour," said BreadTalk Chief Financial
Officer Lawrence Yeo. "In response, we've had to fine tune our
business model."

Pets recreate best films in 'The Pawscars'
"The Pawscars," imagines this year's most acclaimed movies as seen through the eyes of pets (Pet Collective)
During each year?s Super Bowl broadcast pet lovers worldwide get the Puppy Bowl. So, why shouldn?t there be an equivalent for the Oscars? The Pet Collective has given us a hint of what such an event might be like with its new video ?The Pawscars.?
The video opens with this year?s Oscars' host ?Seth MacFarlane? lamenting that he has not seen any of the nominated films and wishing that his dog Bingo could tell him about the acclaimed movies.
Thus begins Bingo?s Pawscars dream sequence, which finds him and other animals playing out the roles made famous in films such as "Django Unchained," "Argo," "Zero Dark Thirty" and "Silver Linings Playbook."
The best part may well be a dog dressed in Lincoln?s famous top hat, reminiscing over the time he received a bone for a treat:

Did a Secret Vatican Report on Gay Sex and Blackmail Bring Down the Pope?
Pope Benedict XVI has claimed that he's resigning the papacy next week because of old age. But according to the major Italian newspaper?La Repubblica,?the real reason he resigned is because he did not want to deal the repercussions of a secret 300-page Vatican dossier that allegedly found, among other things, an underground network of high-ranking gay clergy, complete with sex parties and shady dealings with the already scandal-ridden Vatican bank. Here's what we know:
RELATED: Who's Leaking the Vatican's Secrets?
The report sounds menacing. According to La Repubblica, the dossier comes in two volumes, "two folders hard-bound in red" with the header "pontifical secret."
RELATED: The Pope Thinks You're Tweeting Too Much
Pope Benedict asked for the investigation. "The paper said the pope had taken the decision on 17 December that he was going to resign ? the day he received a dossier compiled by three cardinals delegated to look into the so-called 'Vatileaks' affair," according to the The Guardian's translation of the report.
RELATED: Pope's Butler to Serve Time in the Comfort of His Home
The Vatican has a Velvet Mafia ? and the Velvet Mafia is being blackmailed.?The dossier alleges that a gay lobby exists within the Church, and has some sort of control on the careers of those in the Vatican. The dossier also alleges that this group isn't as covert as it thinks ? and got blackmailed by people on the outside.?"The cardinals were said to have uncovered an underground gay network, whose members organise sexual meetings in several venues in Rome and Vatican City, leaving them prone to blackmail,"?reads The Sydney Morning Herald's translation of the report, and The Guardian adds: "They included a villa outside the Italian capital, a sauna in a Rome suburb, a beauty parlour in the centre, and a former university residence that was in use by a provincial Italian archbishop." Some important context on this still powerful group:
RELATED: Five Best Monday Columns
- This isn't the first time there's been talk of a gay faction inside the highest ranks of the Church. Indeed, it isn't even the first time that La Repubblica has written about it. Back in 2010, Ghinedu Ehiem, a Nigerian clergyman who was part of one of the Vatican's prestigious choirs,?was dismissed after police wiretaps found him negotiating for male prostitutes. La Repubblica had those wiretaps.
- And "in 2007 a senior official was suspended from the congregation, or department, for the priesthood, after he was filmed in a 'sting' organised by an Italian television programme while apparently making sexual overtures to a younger man," according to?The Guardian ? evidence the paper says connects?to a gay network within the Holy See.
La Repubblica's sourcing seems to have been corroborated.?So how much of this new scandal should you believe? Well, La Repubblica?is not?the only publication with an outline of this scandalous dossier. Panorama, an Italian weekly, has a similar report out late this week and according to the AFP,?both publications have sources (perhaps the same source) who said the same thing: that the investigation shows transgressions that "revolve around the sixth and seventh commandments" ? "Thou shall not commit adultery" and "Thou shall not steal." It's assumed in multiple reports that homosexual sex acts fall under the "adultery" umbrella.?
RELATED: Pope Benedict's Last Intriguing Piece of Business
The Vatican's bank sounds fishy. La Repubblica says that the seventh commandment ("Though shall not steal") has to do with the Institute of Religious Works, the Vatican's Bank. "The three cardinals continued to work beyond 17 December last year. They came up with the latest events concerning the IOR ? here you go to the seventh commandment," reads the report, according to a rough Google Translation. On February 15, Pope Benedict appointed?Ernst von Freyberg, a German lawyer, to head the scandalous?bank.
The Vatican's response isn't exactly comforting. They Church isn't flat-out denying the inflammatory allegations from?La Repubblica, and they've pulled the classic act of neither confirming nor denying. Vatican spokesman Father Ferederico Lombardi?said in a statement:?
Neither the cardinals' commission nor I will make comments to confirm or deny the things that are said about this matter. Let each one assume his or her own responsibilities. We shall not be following up on the observations that are made about this.
Pope Benedict's successor will have a rough first day.?If this damning dossier was really a big enough deal to have forced the first papal resignation in 600 years, who gets to deal with it? That undertaking will go to Benedict's successor. According to La Repubblica, the dossier will stay in a secret papal safe and delivered to Benedict's successor whenever he is elected ? and that isn't all, La Repubblica said this gay blackmail thing is just the first in a series of articles by the paper.?

Samsung Series 7 Chronos trickles into US stores
After whetting our appetite at CES, Samsung's updated Series 7 Chronos is slowly squeaking its way into US retailers. Spotted at Best Buy for $1,200, this 21mm dynamo packs a 2.4GHz Intel Core i7 3635QM CPU and an AMD Radeon HD 8870M GPU along with a 15.6-inch touchscreen. While this lean, mean, Windows 8 machine's streamlined design and spec sheet are impressive, such adornment comes at a price. Absent from the Chronos' fine engineering is room for an optical drive, so DVD and Blu-ray enthusiasts be warned. However, should this caveat not apply to you, then by all means you have our blessings to check out Sammy's new up and comer.

Prepare Yourself for the Invasion with the Zombies: Run or Kill Game for Android
Nis, Serbia and Montenegro, February 21, 2013 ?(PR.com)? By playing "Zombies: Run or Kill" game you fight for survival against endless waves of walkers. These zombies were made as really annoying and stubborn creatures, fighting hard and making you not let go of your phone for hours, until you destroy them all. The game was made in the Unity Game Engine.
Game-play may seem simple? zombies come from all over the place and you should try to endure as long as possible not to be killed ? but it?s harder than it looks. There are different weapons from which you can choose, such as gun, riffle, chainsaw, light saber and machine gun. In order for the zombie hordes to be destroyed, you should play the game wisely. With every zombie killed, you upgrade your weapons and get new missions to fulfill.
This is a relatively fresh game on the Android market, and the version for iOS is expected anytime soon. The game is new, but it already has a lot of fans and more than 300,000 downloads on the Google play market. Plus, there is a version of this game on the Amazon market, for Kindle devices. And this is what people who've played this game said. "This kind of quality is hard to find in games and it being free makes it now my favorite and most played game on my phone," said Trinity Carter, who is only one of the satisfied users of this game.

Pro-gun policies, NRA may undercut GOP Latino outreach
Republican opposition to gun control measures may damage the party amongst Latino voters, even as the party works to rebuild its image amongst the country?s fastest-growing voter block.
Just 18% of Latinos own guns, making them less likely than any other racial demographic to own a firearm, and they value gun rights less than any other demographic, according to a?February Gallup poll. An April 2012 poll found that 57% of white voters ranked gun rights over that of gun ownership, as opposed to 29% of Latinos who ranked gun rights over gun ownership.
?Community violence and gun violence is something that has a deep impact within the Latino community, Latinos are about seven times more likely to die at the hands of a gun,? explained Jennifer Ng?andu, the director of health and civil rights at National Council of La Raza. ?It?s hard to say if this is a swing issue for any community, but what I know is that people have very strong, visceral reactions about how they want to preserve community safety.?
The GOP has made enormous efforts to soften?its stance on immigration, an issue they hope will help sway some Latino voters towards their candidates in future elections, but party-wide has held strong on gun rights.
In his State of the Union rebuttal Tuesday, Sen. Marco Rubio doubled down on the GOP?s stance on guns: ?We were all heart-broken by the recent tragedy in Connecticut,? he said. ?We must effectively deal with the rise of violence in our country. But unconstitutionally undermining the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding Americans is not the way to do it.?
Ng?andu noted that while Republicans have certainly softened?their previous stances on immigration, Latinos aren?t a single-issue voting block.
?There?s certainly been a lot of calibration on what the GOP thinks on immigration,? Ng?andu said. ?The fact is there are a variety of issues that Latinos care about? the welfare of their communities, the economy, education.?
The GOP has aligned itself closely with the National Rifle Association, whose pro-gun efforts are perceived by some to be racist. An editorial published Wednesday in the Daily Caller cited Latin American drug gangs and urban looters as a reason Americans needed guns. Morning Joe host Joe Scarborough slammed the?editorial for ?racial undertones? that would hurt the party?s outreach amongst Latinos.
?Everything that Republicans are now trying to do to make up for their 27% showing in the election with Hispanics, Wayne LaPierre has undercut with this letter by talking about Latin American drug gangs, by talking about South Brooklyn,? he said on Thursday?s Morning Joe, referring to the low percentage of Latinos who voted for Romney in 2012 ?Again a racially tinged, very suggestive op-ed [by LaPierre] who Republicans are blindly following around.?
The NRA has a history of clashing with Latino politicians, too: In 2009, the NRA angered Latino voters and politicians when they opposed the nomination of Sonia Sotomayor to the Supreme Court. Democrats with strong NRA ratings wrote an open letter fighting their opposition to the nomination.
?We are concerned that your opposition will alienate Hispanic NRA members and dismayed that you may unnecessarily force some well-intentioned Senators to choose between disappointing the NRA or infuriating their Hispanic constituents,? wrote Reps. Joe Baca, D-Calif., Solomon Ortiz, D-Texas, and Silvestre Reyes, D-Texas, and John Salazar, D-Colo, who all had high ratings by the NRA.

Africa?s dream team
Johannesburg ? From a player stuck in the obscurity of the French second division to one from a collection of millionaires at Champions League winners Chelsea, Reuters' selection of a 'dream team' for the African Nations Cup reflects the wide diversity of the players who competed at the finals in South Africa over the last three weeks:
Goalkeeper
Vincent Enyeama (Nigeria): The Nigeria captain never looked pressured and had an error-free tournament in contrast to some of the calamitous goalkeeping seen in South Africa. With more than a decade's experience in the national side, Enyeama proved a steely influence on his younger team mates. His best performance was against Ivory Coast in the quarter-final where he made a number of key saves, including one from Kolo Toure with the game at a critical juncture.
DEFENDERS
Fousseiny Diawara (Mali): Right back Diawara recently returned to international football and his addition to the squad for the Nations Cup gave Mali a defensive polish. Little got past him, even though he had some tough players to deal with, and he proved thoughtful and measured in his forward forays, adding extra impetus at the right moment to his team's attacks.
Bakary Kone (Burkina Faso): The runners-up ended the tournament conceding only three goals, one of them from the penalty spot. Much of this had to do with the form of the 24-year-old centrla defender from Olympique Lyon. Kone was one of Burkina Faso's three key players at the tournament, often coming to the rescue of his centre back partner Paul Koulibaly.
Nando (Cape Verde Islands): The captain of the gusty islanders retired from international football after an inspirational leadership role at the tournament, where Cape Verde were making their debut. With a mop of unruly hair, central defender Nando rose from the obscurity of the French second division to exemplify the fighting spirit of his team
Elderson Echiejile (Nigeria): Using the flanks was a big part of Nigeria's winning strategy and the Super Eagles' left back used every opportunity to get forward and pose an offensive threat. His goal against Mali in the semi-final keyed a devastating performance which set Nigeria up for the title. The 25-year-old now returns to Braga in Portugal, where he had been condemned to the reserves earlier in the season.
Midfielders
John Obi Mikel (Nigeria): The Chelsea man was imperious throughout and should have been crowned the tournament's best player. He has been a full fixture in Nigeria's side since 2006 but failed to live up to his potential until now. His command of the midfield, strength in holding onto the ball, disrupting opponents and driving the team forward laid the platform for his team's victory and re-established his credentials as one of Africa's best.
Charles Kabore (Burkina Faso): Suspended for the first game, Kabore returned to the side as Burkina Faso beat Ethiopia 4-0 in their second group match. He directed play from the heart of midfield, popping up at full back, where he usually plays for Olympique Marseille, and darting into the opposing penalty area soon after. He was a calming influence when his team were on the brink of being carried away by their enthusiasm.
Seydou Keita (Mali): The 33-year-old proved the catalyst for Mali's third place finish. He scored three goals to become his country's record Nations Cup finals scorer, going past Frederic Kanoute. Keita moved effortlessly around the pitch, fetching and carrying the ball, producing probing passes and running into clever positions. It was his sixth appearance at the finals.
Jonathan Pitroipa (Burkina Faso): An uncanny burst of acceleration and super skills made spindly Pitroipa a joy to watch. He was named the Player of the Tournament although will probably best be remembered for the red card that ruled him out of the final, only for the Confederation of African Football to rescind the decision.
Forwards
Victor Moses (Nigeria): Just a year on from his debut for Nigeria, the former England under-21 international is now an African champion. Despite battling injury throughout the tournament, Moses scored twice against Ethiopia in the last group game to ensure Nigeria's progress, and in the semi-final against Mali the winger tormented the opposing defence.
Emmanuel Emenike (Nigeria): Finished joint top goal scorer with four but had the heartbreak of having to sit out the final because of a hamstring injury. The Russian-based forward has a direct style with fearsome speed and strength, reminiscent of Nigeria great Rashidi Yekini, and also proved a threat at set pieces. ? Reuters

A-Rod to rehab in New York, not at spring training
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) ? Alex Rodriguez will not report to spring training with the Yankees' position players and will work on his rehabilitation from hip surgery in New York.
The third baseman is expected to be sidelined until at least the All-Star break following the Jan. 16 operation.
"I spoke to him last week. He was still barely, I think, on the crutches," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said Tuesday during his opening spring-training remarks. "There's not a lot that he can do here."
The Miami New Times last month published records that allege Rodriguez purchased performance-enhancing substances in recent years from Biogenesis of America LLC, a now-closed clinic in Coral Gables, near Rodriguez's offseason home.
Rodriguez has denied the allegations, and Major League Baseball is investigating the matter. Four years ago, Rodriguez admitted using PEDS from 2001-03 while with the Texas Rangers.
"Him being in New York has nothing to do with trying to get rid of a distraction," Girardi said. "It's the best place him for him to be."
Girardi said that when Rodriguez is able to do more, his situation will change.
"I think Alex had somewhat of a special surgery," the manager said. "It's not a hamstring. It's not something we've done a lot of, and we feel at this point the best place for him to be is New York, rehabbing under the doctor's supervision."

Google bug returns porn for mathematical queries
Devin Coldewey , NBC News ? ? ? 7 hrs.
A bug in Google search ? fortunately, a rare one ? gives porn links and images as results when the user puts certain mathematical equations into the search box. It's certainly strange, but there is an explanation.
It was discovered by a user of the Q&A site Quora, who wrote a question asking why the search "-4^(1/4)" should return not just the result of that equation but hundreds of links to a wide variety of porn sites.
The search still works, and you can try it yourself, although if you're at work, you might want to wait until the boss is out of sight. Results are similarly inappropriate with image search.
So what's happening here? Another user of Quora (who stayed anonymous to avoid being associated with porn by Google, clearly a serious risk) broke it down. Google calculates the numerical query as it should, but also runs it as a normal text search as well, just in case. When it does that, it interprets things differently: the parentheses act like quote marks and the negative sign is used to exclude unwanted words from results.
The end result is that Google tries to find pages that have a 1 and a 4 next to each other... but no 4s. Obviously there are no pages that both have and don't have a 4, and as Google search engineer Jeremy Hoffman showed up at Quora to explain, it should return no results.
Instead, the bug results in these porn sites being shown, which have been extensively optimized to show up on as many searches as possible, even unrelated ones. The optimization is so strong that porn is showing up even for queries that don't make sense! Other contradictory queries return porn results, but not all.
Google declined to comment to NBC News. But the Google engineer who answered the question says that a bug fix is on the way, so you can calculate on Google with no fear of smutty links clogging up your results.

Ford Focus 2006 LX fuse box?
Hey guys, I think the fuse has blown for my interior light, is the fuse box for my car located under the glovebox? Or has anyone got a diagram as to which fuse is for the interior light?
Many thanks.

By combining low temperatures and NMR spectroscopy, the scientists visualized seven intermediate forms of the CylR2 protein while cooling it down from 25C to -16C. Their results show that the most instable intermediate form plays a key role in protein folding. The scientists' findings may contribute to a better understanding of how proteins adopt their structure and misfold during illness.
Whether Alzheimer's, Parkinson's or Huntington's Chorea all three diseases have one thing in common. They are caused by misfolded proteins that form insoluble clumps in the brains of affected patients and, finally, destroy their nerve cells. One of the most important questions in the biological sciences and medicine is thus: How do proteins the tools of living cells achieve or lose their three-dimensional structure. Because only if their amino acid chains are correctly folded, can proteins perform their tasks properly.
But what exactly happens when proteins fold or unfold was previously nearly impossible to investigate. With heat and pressure, proteins easily lose their shape and thus their function. However, such methods are not suitable for directly observing their unfolding process. The intermediate forms that occur in the course of protein folding are much too transient.
With a novel approach, researchers have now succeeded in "filming" the complex process of protein folding for the first time. Scientists at the Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry (MPIbpc) and the German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases (DZNE) in Gttingen, together with their colleagues at the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw and at the University of Warsaw, have rendered visible at atomic resolution how a protein progressively "loses its shape". In doing so, the researchers had pinned their hopes on low temperatures. "If a protein is slowly cooled down, its intermediate forms accumulate in larger quantities than in commonly used denaturation methods, such as heat, pressure, or urea. We hoped that these quantities would be sufficient to examine the intermediate forms with nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy," said Markus Zweckstetter, head of the research groups "Protein Structure Determination using MNR" at the MPIbpc and "Structural Biology in Dementia" at the DZNE in Gttingen.
How a protein loses its shape
As research object, Zweckstetter's team chose a key protein for toxin production in Enterococcus faecalis, a pathogen frequently encountered in hospitals where it particularly infects patients with a weak immune system. But that is not the only reason why the so-called CylR2 protein is interesting. Some time ago, researchers working with Stefan Becker at the MPIbpc succeeded in elucidating its structure, which shows: Its three-dimensional shape makes CylR2 a particular promising candidate for the scientists' approach. "ClyR2 is a relatively small protein composed of two identical subunits. This gave us a great chance to be able to visualize the individual stages of its unfolding process in the test tube," explained the chemists Mariusz and Lukasz Jaremko.
Stefan Becker's group undertook the first step: to prepare a sufficient quantity of the protein in the laboratory. Subsequently, the two chemists cooled the protein successively from 25C to -16C and examined its intermediate forms with NMR spectroscopy. They achieved what they had hoped for: Their "film clip" shows at atomic resolution how the protein gradually unfolds. The structural biologist Markus Zweckstetter describes exactly what happens in this process: "We clearly see how the CylR2 protein ultimately splits into its two subunits. The individual subunit is initially relatively stable. With further cooling, the protein continues to unfold and at -16 C it is extremely instable and dynamic. This instable protein form provides the seed for folding and can also be the "trigger" for misfolding." The scientist's findings may help to gain deeper insights into how proteins assume their spatial structure and why intermediate forms of certain proteins misfold in the event of illness. (cr)

Mother superior role for Huppert in Berlin film
BERLIN (AP) ? A new adaptation of writer Denis Diderot's 18th-century novel "The Nun" is making its debut at the Berlin film festival, featuring French star Isabelle Huppert as a convent's mother superior.
The movie, directed by Guillaume Nicloux, is one of 19 competing for the Berlin festival's top Golden Bear honor.
The story centers on a young woman, played by Belgian actress Pauline Etienne, forced by her family to enter a convent, where she suffers harassment.
Huppert's long list of credits includes "The Piano Player" and "Madame Bovary." She said ahead of the new film's premiere Sunday that her latest role offered the challenge of avoiding caricature.
"It was very easy to go behind the caricature," she said. "She's a superior mother, but she has nothing superior."

Watch talks from Gabe Newell to Ray Muzyka in the collected DICE 2013 presentations, right here
This year's DICE was especially heavy on great speakers, and we're happy to say that a partnership between The Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences and entertainment trade publication Variety means that most of the great speeches were captured for all to see on YouTube. That means everything from Valve head Gabe Newell's speech on his company's next steps in the hardware realm to Microsoft's discussion of the latest, greatest Halo game -- and even a surprise appearance from the recently retired BioWare doctor, Ray Muzyka -- was recorded. We've dropped the available talks just below the break; sadly, the first day's J.J. Abrams / Gabe Newell back-and-forth on storytelling was an in-person exclusive. We'll have a variety of interviews from DICE with many of the speakers seen beyond the break in the coming days -- keep an eye out (or a bookmark here, of course)!

7.0 deep quake hits Colombia, no injuries reported
BOGOTA, Colombia (AP) ? A powerful but deep earthquake shook a broad swath of Colombia and Ecuador on Saturday, sending frightened people fleeing into the streets, but no serious injuries or major damage were reported.
The U.S. Geological Survey said the 9:16 a.m. (14:16 GMT) quake had a magnitude of 6.9.It was centered about 7 miles (12 kilometers) from the Colombian town of Pasto and 92 miles (154 kilometers) below the surface.
The quake was felt in the Colombian capital of Bogota, some 340 miles (545 kilometers) to the northeast, and across much of neighboring Ecuador.
In the province of Narino, where the quake hit, secretary of government Jaime Rodriguez said officials had reports of three people hurt when roof tiles fell in the town of El Charco along the Pacific Coast. Officials in Ecuador also reported no significant damage.
Colombian television showed people fleeing into the streets in southwestern cities such as Cali, and small cracks in the walls of some buildings.
Mayor Paulo Cesar Rodriguez of the town of Tuquerres near the epicenter said the quake was "very strong and felt for a long time" but that there were no reports of injuries in the town of 42,300.
