Great news!?Today is National Drink Beer Day, so you?ve got a built-in excuse to go celebrate (you?re on your own the other 364 days of the year!) Some of my friends have no problem trying different types of beer (me neither) and that?s a good thing because our taste buds will never get bored. But, if you?re like many of my other friends who stick to the same style and brand of beer day in and day out, I urge you to get out of your rut and try something different to broaden your horizons or at least your palate. And it just may be easier on your pocketbook, since so many bars and restaurants have different daily beer specials that can save you some cash while you?re trying something new.
Beers are categorized into two groups, lagers and ales, depending on the types of yeast and temperatures used dur?ing their cre?ation and fermentation. Lagers use a yeast that fer?ments best at cool tem?per?a?tures, while ales use a yeast that fer?ments better at warmer temps. There are a number of good websites that explain all the different types of beers so, rather than reinvent the wheel, here are some of my favorites. The Beer Pros have a great page, Beer 101, which is short, to the point and can be found at: http://www.thebrewbros.com/beer-101/. I also love the BeerAdvocate?s website (http://beeradvocate.com/), which is full of great information found in its magazine by the same name, and more.
If you live in Raleigh and are looking for a wide selection of beers, either on tap or bottled/canned, luckily there are numerous places for you to choose from and far too many for me to list. Here are some of my favorites, in no particular order, along with some bar food recommendations in some cases. Keep in mind that many of these bars offer beer flights, which are a specific number of small pours, usually 5 ounces, from a predetermined menu. Some places will let you design your own flights, and either way it?s a great way to sample new beers!
Flying Saucer (328 W. Morgan St., Raleigh, N.C. 27601)
Join the UFO club for $18.00 and get a t-shirt and a card to track what you drink. Once you hit 200 different beers you?ll be inducted into the ring of honor with a plate party and $100.00 to spend on beer and food! Love the big soft pretzels and the wings. Great outside seating!
**Note ? since I posted this I?ve learned that Flying Saucer no longer gives you the $100.00 for your plate party. Sigh. Glad Brad and I had ours years ago!
Brickhouse (3801 Hillsborough Street, Raleigh, N.C. 27607)
Bar Goddess Maddie takes good care of Brad and me, so that?s one of the reasons this place is on my list. It?s close to home, has more than 40 beers on tap and lots of big screens (some could use upgrading) to watch sports, especially anything Wolfpack! Good outside seating, especially if you don?t mind trains. I have not eaten here since it became the Brickhouse, so I have no food recommendations. I do love its Bloody Marys as well!
Tyler?s Taproom (18 Seaboard Ave., Raleigh, N.C 27604)
Tyler?s recently opened in Raleigh and has more than 80 beers on tap, plus a bottle shop to purchase beers to take home. Nice outside seating, great food. I especially like the Carolina Nachos and the fried green tomato, pimento cheese BLT. Yum!
Village Draft House (428 Daniels St, Raleigh, N.C. 27605)
Located in Raleigh?s Cameron Village Shopping Center, the Draft House has 99 beers on tap. I love its fried pickles and spinach/artichoke dip, but am quite upset that the potato skins are off the menu. Why did they do that? This place is normally packed at lunch and has outside seating. Nice place to stop for a beer if you?re in the Village shopping.
World of Beer (4208-150 Six Forks Rd., Raleigh, N.C. 27609)
WOB recently opened in Raleigh?s trendy North Hills and is a franchise that has many U.S. locations. Brad and I visited it for the first time just last weekend and there was a good crowd enjoying beer in its outside seating area since it was such a beautiful evening. Good beer selection, with live music Thursday-Saturday nights. I?m not sure that WOB serves food ? I didn?t see any menus in the bar or on its website. We stopped to check it out on our way to Fox and Hound, which is right across the street, and I can see going back again.
Fox and Hound (4158 Main At North Hills St., Raleigh, N.C. 27609)
Fox and Hound is part of a national chain, and a great place to watch a game. I?ll never forget one afternoon a few years ago I was shopping at North Hills and planned to meet Brad here to watch the second half of some college football games. I arrived early and was so lucky to grab two stools at the bar, right in front of TVs that were showing the NCSU and ECU games, which were the two we wanted to see! Love the potato skins here, which I posted about several months ago.
Carolina Ale House (various locations in Raleigh and surrounding area)
CAH has lots of North Carolina brews on tap. It?s a great place to watch sports or take the kids for a meal, and the food is pretty decent. Gabe and Lexi love the wings and I can recommend the Carolina Dipper and the Ale House Chili Nachos (also one of Brad?s favorites), which you will want to share. I tried the seasonal flight with some great Oktober-fest type beers.
Draft Carolina Burgers and Beers (510 Glenwood Ave, Raleigh, N.C., 27603)
Great selection of North Carolina beers, fantastic potato skins and awesome burgers ? some of the best I?ve had in Raleigh as noted in my burger and potato skins blog posts. That?s basically all you need to know. Go there and enjoy!
My favorite store with an awesome beer selection is the Peace Street Market (804 W. Peace St., Raleigh, N.C. 27605)
It may not look like a beer haven from the outside, but inside there are three long walls of coolers filled with various brands of beer, not to mention the nonrefrigerated aisles of brew. The Market carries growlers for the local breweries. This is probably the best beer selection in Raleigh!
However, if you can?t get downtown, Whole Foods (various locations) has a good craft selection.
So there you go ? no matter what your taste is in beer, you will probably find something to satisfy it in Raleigh. BTW ? many thanks to Brad for helping me with my research. I?m pretty sure he didn?t mind!
Remember to drink and drive responsibly!
Eat, drink and be merry!

ScienceDaily (Sep. 28, 2012) ? Millions of pounds of unexploded bombs and other military ordnance that were dumped decades ago in the Gulf of Mexico, as well as off the coasts of both the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, could now pose serious threats to shipping lanes and the 4,000 oil and gas rigs in the Gulf, warns two Texas A&M University oceanographers.
William Bryant and Neil Slowey, professors of oceanography who have more than 90 years of combined research experience in all of Earth's oceans, along with fellow researcher Mike Kemp of Washington, D.C., say millions of pounds of bombs are scattered over the Gulf of Mexico and also off the coasts of at least 16 states, from New Jersey to Hawaii.
Bryant says the discarded bombs are hardly a secret. "This has been well known for decades by many people in marine science and oceanography," he explains.
He will give a presentation in San Juan, Puerto Rico on Oct. 1 about the bombs to a group of oceanographers and marine scientists in a conference titled "International Dialogue on Underwater Munitions."
"This subject has been very well documented through the years," Bryant explains. "My first thought when I saw the news reports of the Deepwater Horizon explosion in the Gulf two years ago were, 'Oh my gosh, I wonder if some of the bombs down there are to blame.'"
Military dumping of unused bombs into the Gulf and other sites started in 1946 and continued until 1970, when it was finally banned.
Millions of pounds -- no one, including the military, knows how many -- were sent to the ocean floor as numerous bases tried to lessen the amount of ordnance at their respective locations.
"The best guess is that at least 31 million pounds of bombs were dumped, but that could be a very conservative estimate," Bryant notes.
"And these were all kinds of bombs, from land mines to the standard military bombs, also several types of chemical weapons. Our military also dumped bombs offshore that they got from Nazi Germany right after World War II. No one seems to know where all of them are and what condition they are in today."
Photos show that some of the chemical weapons canisters, such as those that carried mustard gas, appear to be leaking materials and are damaged.
"Is there an environmental risk? We don't know, and that in itself is reason to worry," explains Bryant. "We just don't know much at all about these bombs, and it's been 40 to 60 years that they've been down there."
With the ship traffic needed to support the 4,000 energy rigs, not to mention commercial fishing, cruise lines and other activities, the Gulf can be a sort of marine interstate highway system of its own. There are an estimated 30,000 workers on the oil and gas rigs at any given moment.
The bombs are no stranger to Bryant and Slowey, who have come across them numerous times while conducting various research projects in the Gulf, and they have photographed many of them sitting on the Gulf floor like so many bowling pins, some in areas cleared for oil and gas platform installation.
"We surveyed some of them on trips to the Gulf within the past few years," he notes. "Ten are about 60 miles out and others are about 100 miles out. The next closest dump site to Texas is in Louisiana, not far from where the Mississippi River delta area is in the Gulf. Some shrimpers have recovered bombs and drums of mustard gas in their fishing nets."
Bombs used in the military in the 1940s through the 1970s ranged from 250- to 500- and even 1,000-pound explosives, some of them the size of file cabinets. The military has a term for such unused bombs: UXO, or unexploded ordnance.
"Record keeping of these dump sites seems to be sketchy and incomplete at best. Even the military people don't know where all of them are, and if they don't know, that means no one really knows," Bryant adds. He believes that some munitions were "short dumped," meaning they were discarded outside designated dumping areas.
The subject of the disposal of munitions at sea has been discussed at several offshore technology conferences in recent years, and it was a topic at an international conference several years ago in Poland, Bryant says.
"The bottom line is that these bombs are a threat today and no one knows how to deal with the situation," Bryant says. "If chemical agents are leaking from some of them, that's a real problem. If many of them are still capable of exploding, that's another big problem.
"There is a real need to research the locations of these bombs and to determine if any are leaking materials that could be harmful to marine life and humans," Bryant says.

Izetbegovic, Bosniak [Muslim] member of the country's tripartite presidency, told the UN General Assembly that the international community ?failed? to handle the crisis in eastern Bosnia in July 1995 - and was in danger of repeating the same error in Syria.
?The best way to honour the victims of Srebrenica is to learn from the mistakes. Unfortunately, the UN has failed to do that," he said.
"The international community has once again chosen the ?trial and error? policy, which failed in Bosnia,? Izetbegovic added.
?[The use of] resolutions, statements of concern, ineffectual sanctions, observers and lack of a clear mandate to protect civilians ? which result in deaths ? was demonstrated in my country," he recalled.
"Do not make this mistake. If we don't act now, decisively, to help the Syrian people and stop the bloodshed, this tragedy will haunt us, just like Srebrenica,? he continued.
?
Izetbegovic was referring to the mass slaughter of Bosniaks that occured under the noses of the UN in the besieged eastern Bosnian town of Srebrenica in July 1995.
Although the town was a UN-declared demilitarized zone, Bosnian Serb forces under General Ratko Mladic attacked and overran the town and killed more than 7,000 people.
The International Court of Justice in a ruling in 2007 qualified the massacre as an act of genocide.
At the time of the Bosnian Serb attack, a UN Dutch battalion was stationed in Srebrenica, but it did not stop the slaughter. ?
Izetbegovic said that all UN member states were obliged to help the Syrian people in their quest for freedom.
?Once more we stand idly by while a human tragedy is going on. We must save the Syrian people from tyranny. We must, but we do not," he said.
"The images we are seeing from Syria remind us of the Bosnian tragedy. We in Bosnia and Herzegovina feel the pain the Syrian people as our own, because we too went through the same horrors,? Izetbegovic added.
The Bosnian presidency member recalled that the former and current UN General Secretaries, Kofi Annan and Ban Ki-Moon, had visited Srebrenica to pay homage to the victims, and both men had said that such events should never be permitted in future. ?
?Today, these words ring with the sounds of the failure of this organization [the UN] to respond to the Syrian tragedy,? he maintained.
Speaking about the future of his own country, Izetbegovic stated that it was ?vital to protect the mosaic of ethnicities and cultures? in Bosnia.
?There is a great fight on now between the forces of reconciliation and division in my country today... [and] if the idea of reconciliation does not prevail in Bosnia, then it will have a hard time doing so anywhere else,? he concluded.
There is no settled international consensus on the desirability of direct intervention in the crisis in Syria.
While some Gulf states openly support rebel forces, the government in Damascus has retained strong support from China, Russia and Iran.

One of my absolute favourite bloggers, the very lovely, stylish, and no doubt fragrant Alice from More Than Toast has recently written a couple of posts on corners of her home ? which for a nosey parker like me have been extremely enjoyable reading/viewing. ?Basically she showcases littles aspects and snapshots of her lovely family home and at the same time, gives you a little window into her life. ?Love it.
In fact, I loved it so much, it inspired me to replicate the idea over here on my own blog (well, they say imitation is the highest form of flattery, so hopefully she won?t mind too much as I copy her idea!). ?So, here for your nosey-parker pleasures, are some corners of my home?.
Actually, before I dive in with the photos, a little background first? Richmond Daddy and I bought our house back in 2007, a Victorian villa style 3-bed semi, on a quiet(ish) little road in Richmond. ?The previous owner had been here 14 years and not done all that much to it in recent years, so it was in need of a little updating and TLC, but we could see the potential. ?In fact, despite the fact that it sits smack bang right next to the railway (and yes the bed does shake a little if a particularly speedy freight train zooms past around midnight!), we loved it on sight and put an offer in on the same day ? having not even viewed any other properties!
Five years on and we?ve ripped out and re-done the upstairs bathroom, downstairs loo, and kitchen. ?The windows have all been replaced (double-glazing helps with the train noise!) and the floorboards have been re-laid downstairs, new carpet laid upstairs. There?s been much plastering and painting and finishing touches, but now we?re finally in a place where it?s more or less done. ?More or less (there are always new things you find to do right?!). ?So, allow me now to share a few corners of my home:
We bought this cabinet in a junk/antique/furniture restorer place in Kingston-Upon-Thames and apparently it is French. ?I liked it?s unusual design and it?s distressed look and it now sits in our living room and provides a nice mini gallery space for a set of photos that make me smile. ?Hanging above the cabinet are four etchings of French kings that we picked up a the Decorative Antiques & Textiles Fair in Battersea a few years ago.
I love this vase, which is by one of my favourite artists/designers/paper cutters ? Rob Ryan. ? ?I have tried to have a book cull, but we still seem to have more than we have space for. ?Still, I think books make a house look homely, so I?ll be hanging on to these ones at least.
After much searching for the perfect railway style clock, we found this one while on holiday a few years ago in Ile de Noirmoutier, France. ?It hangs on the wall between the kitchen and the dining room and always attracts attention.
Allegra?s room is the smallest in the house, but it doesn?t mean she can?t cram it with all manner of soft toys and cuddly things. This chair sits beside her cot and is a resting place for big Ted (given by Granny & Grandad). ?The blanket I bought from one of my favourite interiors shops in Richmond, Maison, and the gorgeous personalised cushion was a gift from a very dear friend and her little boy, who is one of Allegra?s NCT birth buddies.
This dresser, another (but slightly larger!) purchase from Maison in Richmond, has pride of place in the dining room. ?It is home to a clutter of Emma Bridgewater plates, cups, and saucers, along with assorted mixing bowls, cake stands, vases, and various other odds ?n? sods. ?Including of course the odd bottle of Pimm?s and white port (Richmond Daddy?s favourite!).
To be lucky enough to have a beautiful home filled with very special things, makes me very conscious of preserving as much of it as possible and safe-guarding for the future, which is why home insurance is so important. ?If the worst was to happen, I might not be able to replace some of the more sentimental items, but at least it would ensure we were covered to build up a collection of new special things to fill our home.

?This year?s conference is particularly important,? said conference co-organizer John Lawson, and CEO of both ColderICE which provides eCommerce education and consulting and the ICE Group, a trade association of powerful and successful online e-tailers. ??As advances in eCommerce and online marketplaces rocket forward, online retailers are on the threshold of phenomenal growth and even traditional retailers are seeking ways to expand and increase their bottom line via the internet.?
With more and more shoppers in the United States turning to online buying, it is predicted that consumers will spend $327 billion in 2016, up 45% from $226 billion this year and 62% from $202 billion in 2011, according to a report released by Forrester Research Inc.
The conference is aimed not only at eCommerce company founders and other ePreneurs but any business owner, corporate CEO, President, Vice President or General Manager who is responsible for online marketplaces or is leaning toward online retail.
Industry experts predict that over the next few years, eCommerce is expected to undergo a profound change as technological developments and enhanced security measures in online payment systems and digital wallets pave the road towards mass acceptance of these practices. ?If you have a business and you?re not selling your goods and services online, you?re missing out on an extremely critical marketplace?

At a hastily called press conference outside the United Nations, a spokeswoman for? Iranian?President Mahmoud?Ahmadinejad confirmed that Ahmadinejad is an imposter. ?The man the world assumes to be Iran?s president is actually Pedro al Fayez, son of Columbian and Saudi Arabian parents, who run a prominent dry cleaning business on the south coast of England in Brighton.
Shock and relief was felt around the world as details of this international scandal became known. ?Following a diplomatic briefing late Tuesday night, Mr. Al Fayez was spotted by a former girlfriend who just happened upon the phalanx of security. ??Pedro, where the bloody hell have you been?? Where?s your measuring tape and what?s with all the security?,? his former liaison from Brighton called out.
?Mahmoud just lost it right then and there,? a United Nations executive told WWN. ?He went ashen and started to shudder and shake. ?A sort of guttural gasp was heard.? It sounded something like ?oh shit? and then Al Fayez broke into a hysterical sort of ?laugh-crying? that was halted only after a UN EMTs injection.?
Al Fayez was immediately whisked away by UN police to an unknown location for questioning. ? WWN has learned through several sources that Al Fayez has been engaged in a nearly decade long??prank? spawned by a bitter, ego fueled rivalry with?noted comedic actor, Sacha Baron Cohen, while he was attending Cambridge University. Ahmadinejad began to unravel after Cohen?s The Dictator came out.? ?He felt like Cohen got the upper hand and that made him crazy,? a source close to Ahmadinejad said.
In late 2001, Al Fayez was working as a delivery man for a local laundry with a contract to serve several of the Cambridge dorms. ? Upon entering Baron Cohen?s room, Al Fayez was barraged with racial and socio economic epithets. ?The initial exchange brewed a tempest of escalating critiques flying back and forth. ?Baron Cohen had already begun to develop a reputation in the region for manufacturing outrageous, highly offensive characters that he would insert into real life in an effort to hoodwink the audience.
Having brought each other to a high state of anger and frustration, ?Baron Cohen threw down the gauntlet by offering to trade places with Al Fayez for a full semester if Al Fayez cold fool even one half of one percent of the rubes out there. ??Game on matey-mate-chappy-blokeroo,? they were heard to chime in unison, and Al Fayez put in place his plan to trick the entirety of Iran into believing his character was legit ? a role in which he became inextricably linked for over a decade.
For indeed, Pedro had bested Borat in the century.? He became President of Iran?? and a chilling 6 months shy of nukes!?
The Supreme Leader of Iran, Seyed Ali Khamenei, reacted swiftly and immediately swore-in a new ?real? president of Iran. The ceremony took place via Skype and was witnessed by many diplomats at the United Nations. A shaken and increasingly dubious UN press corp was speculating widely ?that Skype Khamenei sure looked a lot like Ben Bernanke.?

Alternative conspiracy theories also emerged, connecting the increasing religious fundamentalism in Iran the past decade, with the prevalence of burqas and other extensive religious garb with Al Fayez?s deep roots in dry cleaning and laundry.
Sacha Baron Cohen was unavailable for comment, his press secretary citing a hastily called conclave in Russia with Putin.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Cisco Systems Inc. trimmed CEO John Chambers' pay package for the past fiscal year by 9 percent as concerns about growth at the maker of computer networking equipment weighed on the company's stock.
The value of Chambers' compensation totaled $11.7 million, down from nearly $12.9 million in the previous year, according to documents filed Wednesday with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
Most of Chambers' pay was tied to the future performance of Cisco's stock. That's been the case for most of Chambers' 17-year reign as CEO. That arrangement has worked out well for both Chambers and the company, which is based in San Jose, Calif. Adjusting for stock splits, Cisco's shares have increased 10-fold under Chambers' leadership.
In the last fiscal year, Chambers received stock-based incentives valued at $7.3 million when they were granted in September 2011. They could be worth more or less, depending on how Cisco's stock fares during the next few years.
The last fiscal year ending July 28, however, wasn't good to Cisco's stock.
Cisco shares fell 2 percent from the end of fiscal 2011 to the finish of fiscal 2012. The performance lagged other closely watched stock market indexes, including the Dow Jones industrial average, which consists of Cisco and 29 other major companies.
The Dow rose by 8 percent during Cisco's fiscal year. The broader Standard & Poor's 500 and the technology-driven Nasdaq composite index climbed by 7 percent during the same period.
Investors eschewed Cisco largely because of concerns about its ability to boost its revenue in a fragile economy that has been especially wobbly in Europe. Chambers, known for his blunt comments, stoked those worries in the company's recent earnings call by highlighting the difficult economic conditions.
Despite those challenges, Cisco's revenue in the last fiscal year increased 7 percent to $46 billion. The company's earnings rose 24 percent to $8 billion, helped by cost-cutting measures that included thousands of layoffs.
The rest of Chambers' pay last year consisted of a $375,000 salary, a nearly $4 million bonus for Cisco's progress over several years and $11,025 in company contributions to his 401 (k) plan.
Chambers supplemented his income last year by reaping a $12.4 million gain from 2 million stock options issued to him in previous years. That windfall isn't included in the calculation of his company compensation for the past fiscal year.
Chambers, 63, is expected to retire within the next few years, although he hasn't formally announced a timetable for stepping down.
He will be receiving a bigger paycheck as he heads into the final stretch of his tenure. Cisco's board of directors voted earlier this month to nearly triple Chambers' annual salary to $1.1 million for the current fiscal year.
The Associated Press' calculation isolates the value the company's board placed on the executive's total compensation package in the last fiscal year. In Chambers' case, it includes salary, the performance-related bonus, perks ? the 401(k) contributions ? and the estimated value of stock options and awards granted.
The calculation doesn't include changes in the present value of pension benefits. And the calculations sometimes differ from the totals that companies list in the summary compensation table of proxy statements filed with the SEC. The statements to the SEC reflect accounting charges taken for the executive's compensation in the previous fiscal year.

The state is losing its capacity to function
The extreme violence in several cities of Pakistan on September 21, 2012, negated the spirit of the officially announced Day for Love of the Prophet and undermined the cause of highlighting the evil designs of the US-based makers of the controversial film.
Violence manifested in various forms like damage to public and private property, looting of shops, stores and banks and setting them on fire, burning down of petrol pumps and cinema houses in Karachi and Peshawar, assaults on media teams, and pitched battles with the police. In Mardan, a church was damaged. A day earlier, September 20, there were violent protests in Islamabad and the army was called out to protect the diplomatic enclave that housed most embassies.
September 21 was a Friday and it was expected that Islamic and opposition parties would engage in public protest after the Friday prayer. The prime minister designated the day as the official protest day and declared it a public holiday in order to make sure that the government gets the credit for practical identification with a widely shared cause.
On the mooring of 21st, the prime minister addressed a specially convened meeting of select people in Islamabad on the issue of the objectionable YouTube film. He repeatedly condemned the film and asked the people to protest against it in a peaceful and orderly manner. His speech, broadcasted live on TV and radio networks, had a lot of similarities with what different religious leaders said on the issue.
Major political parties and religious groups participated in the protest on September 21 which began in a peaceful manner. However, with the passage of time the mainstream political parties were pushed to the sideline or they withdrew and the initiative was wrested by the activists of hard line religious groups who mobilized the people for violence. The most violent incidents took place in Islamabad/Rawalpindi, Karachi, Lahore and Peshawar that housed US embassies and consulates. The leaderless violent mob was out to destroy anything and everything that came in its way. At least 23 people were killed, most of them in Karachi.
What happened on September 20 and 21, needs to be examined thoroughly because it offers insights into the kind of domestic socio-economic landscape is going to become a routine affair in Pakistan and how the state of Pakistan can descend into chaos.
These developments manifested once again the polarization in the religious sections of population into those advocating peaceful and moderate approach and those pursuing an aggressive and often violent approach for pursuing their religio-political agendas.
This is not the first time that religiously charged groups used violence to protest for their grievances. The protest against the cartoons six years ago also turned violent in Lahore and some other cities. However, this time violence was more intense because hard line and militant religious groups have gained strength since then.
The leaders who called for protest were either totally absent from the streets or they delivered hard-hitting speeches at the beginning of the protest and then returned to their safe hideouts. The prime minister who made an appeal for protest should have advised his parliamentarians to be vigilant in their constituencies to keep the protest under limit. None of the influential leaders was seen in the street protest. This left the field to the activists of hard line militant groups who created violent mob hysteria.
The violent protest was dominated by the activists of Jamaat-i-Islami, Jamaat-ud-Dawa, Ahle Sunnet-wal-Jamaat (formerly Sipah-e-Sahaba), two factions of the JUI and a host of small groups working under the rubric of the Defa-e-Pakistan Council. Some Afghan refugees were found to be active in Peshawar and Islamabad. The madrassah students were also visible in several places. All these groups are sympathizers and supporters of the Taliban. The Sunni Tehrik and its affiliates were also active in the protest but their activists were not seen engaged in violence. Some Shia groups participated in the protest on that day and earlier but their activists were not visible in violence.
Most violent people were young, between the ages of fifteen to thirty years, influenced by narrow, sectarian and hard line religious discourse. This must also include youth with no regular jobs, no clear hope for their personal future and those looking for some fun and adventure. The experience suggests that some criminal elements also join such agitation to pursue their own agendas.
The mix of the above people constitutes the most serious threat to peace and stability and these people are likely to increase as the Pakistan state is unable and unwilling to address this challenge as a multi-dimensional social, economic and political problem. Most of these people are socialized into a hard line, sectarian and violence prone purely religious worldview. They have no appreciation of Pakistan as a state, their rights and duties as a citizen and how to interact non-violently with those do not share their worldview. A perceptible hostility towards the outside world, especially the West, is noticeable with a strong notion of persecution of Muslims by non-Muslims.
Their socio-political and religious identification ladder runs from an individual to Islamic denominational group or Islamic movement to Islamic Ummah. The state and government do not directly figure in it. The relevance of the state and government depends on the extent to which these facilitate the interests and agendas of their Islamic group or movement. Whatever happens around them, including world politics, is a function of religion. Therefore, the state and government are secondary to their religious-sectarian agendas and they can use violence against those who are seen as a threat to their vision of Islam. At times, violence is used to assert their group identity and power. These groups also compete with each other for building support and getting new recruits and they rely on madrassah and mosque networks.
If the Pakistani state authorities want to save Pakistan from descending into chaos, they will have to identify the hardline and violent groups, their parent religious organizations, their networks and how do they recruit people. If these are separated from the relatively peaceful groups, their role can be contained. It is going to be a difficult task. It relates to changing the mindset of these groups and people. The state functionaries should not ignore these troubles by attributing all this to ?some miscreants?. It is important to recognize that Pakistani state is losing the capacity to function as an over-riding and coherent authority, surrendering a lot of space to violent religious groups.

After weeks in the slump, the US dollar is starting to gain in the Foreign Exchange market. It?s still nowhere near the position most people want especially with the job crisis still at large. In fact, the Bank of America reports possible job cuts of 160,000 by the end of the year. Despite that though, the United States dollar is this week?s safe harbor for most Forex traders.
This can be attributed to the fact that every other currency is at a shaky position. With most national economies looking at China for a global economic help, the fact that nation isn?t responding with enough data is putting everyone at a worried state. Many are concerned that China wouldn?t be holding the reins as the global economy spirals downward and to top it off, the eurozone is still in a state of unrest.
It can be remember that the Euro actually managed to remain stable for the past few weeks as a bit of optimism was present regarding the economy of this 17-nation country. Right now however, disagreements are starting between head personalities in Germany and France. Specifically, the French President Francois Hollande and Chancellor Angela Markel are discussing what can be done to avoid a repeat of the problem and when to start the banking union between countries. Specifically, Chancellor Merkel is responding to President Hollande?s opinion that the bank union should be established as early as possible. Chancellor Merkel is of the opinion that establishment should be thorough even if the financial markets have their eyes set on Europe during that time. Even with efforts from all sides however, Europe is still at a critical risk of recession.
Political factors aren?t the only ones in play here. Recent statistics show that the IFO of German businesses have lowered further as investors start to bail out of shaky foundations of the economy. Even the promise of a plan by the European Central Bank failed to assure investors that are now pulling out of the situation.
?
?
There are also reports stating that the European Stability Mechanism will be upping to a ?2 trillion leverage instead of the original ?500 billion. According to reports, the increase was to support future bailouts that may be coming from Spain and Italy although the German Finance Industry has already refuted the rumor. Still. No specific number has been agreed upon for the European Stability Mechanism as reported by concerned parties.
The United States Dollar isn?t the only one benefitting from this turn of events however. The Japanese Yen is also gaining ground as other traders are looking towards this currency as another safe harbor aside from USD.
Another major player which has been showing promise for the past weeks is starting to decline against the US Dollar. The Aussie is starting to drop in value along with the value of gold against USD. Forex traders may avoid this currency further as reports show more weakening for the Aussie. Many expect that the upcoming Reserve Bank of Australia may cut interest rates in the policy, placing the Aussie in a shaky spot despite its past climb.

A spectacular meteor wowed stargazers across the United Kingdom Friday when it flared up and shattered into pieces in a surprise display of celestial fireworks.
The fireball was spotted by observers across Scotland and northern England as well as Ireland Friday night, according to BBC News and other media reports. Many observers captured views of the meteor on camera, including skywatcher Stuart Pitkeathly.
"At first, I thought it was a helicopter search light rising above the trees on the horizon as I was looking out my window," Pitkeathly, who lives in the town of Dalbeattie in southwest Scotland, told Space.com in an email. "Then as it came closer there was a burst of blue-green light and this was all in a few seconds. It then appeared to have a smoke-like tail billowing from the bright fireball."
Pitkeathly's video of the Sept. 21 meteor shows what appears to be a fireball created as a small space rock breaks apart in Earth's atmosphere. Pieces of the meteor can easily be seen separating from the main body in his view.
Friday's meteor led many witnesses to wonder if it was sparked by a man-made piece of space junk falling out of orbit. But some experts have conclusively tied the event to a naturally occurring space rock burning up in Earth's atmosphere.
Veteran satellite tracker Marco Langbroek, who runs the blog Sattrackcam Leiden in the Netherlands, wrote Monday that the fireball was definitely a meteor. Langbroek used sighting reports to determine the fireball's trajectory and studied videos posted by witnesses to determine how long it lasted.
"This quick back-of-the-envelope reconstruction therefore shows that this must have been a meteoric fireball, quite likely of asteroidal origin, and we definitely can exclude a satellite re-entry," Langbroek wrote in his latest blog post.
The Earth is often struck by tiny space rocks, which generate meteor light shows as they streak across the sky. Several times a year, the remains of comets or asteroids flare up in Earth's atmosphere to create dazzling meteor showers, such as the recent Perseid meteor shower in August.
Pitkeathly said he was surprised by the amount of public interest in Friday's meteor event after he uploaded the video to his YouTube website.?
"The interest for what was captured has been amazing, and thousands of people across the UK and Ireland were eyewitnesses to this on what was a superbly clear night great for stargazing," he said.

Science editor Alan Boyle's blog: Sending your child's toy train into the stratosphere is no mean feat, but turning that train into an animated character requires a special blend of magic.
A would-be meteor in space is called a meteoroid. Only when it flares up in the night sky does it become a meteor. Any remains of the object that reach the ground, meanwhile, are called meteorites.
Earlier this year, a rare daytime fireball surprised U.S. observers in California and Nevada when it unleashed a sonic boom that some mistook for a small earthquake. The meteor was caused by a minivan-size asteroid and created several meteorites that NASA retrieved in a follow-up search.

NEW YORK (AP) ? President Barack Obama said Monday "there's no doubt" that the assault of the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, that killed four Americans including the U.S. ambassador "wasn't just a mob action" but a sign of extremism in nations lacking stability. His words about the Libya killings were his most specific since the White House called it a "terrorist attack" last week.
"What's been interesting, just this past week, there were these massive protests against these extremists militias that are suspected, maybe, of having been involved in this attack," Obama said during the taping of an interview on ABC's talk show program "The View."
The White House initially said the storming of the consulate attack was a spontaneous assault tied to ongoing protests over a video that ridiculed the Prophet Muhammad, but has since broadened its answer to say an investigation will show what ultimately happened.
Obama and first lady Michelle Obama taped the show ? a clear pitch to women voters ? in New York the day before the president addresses the U.N. General Assembly. The interview, a mix of policy, politics and personal tidbits, will air Tuesday. Obama made a solo appearance on "The View" in July 2010, drawing an estimated 6.5 million viewers, according to Nielsen. The first lady appeared on the show in late May, where she discussed family life and the re-election campaign.
Asked if a Mitt Romney presidency would be a disaster, Obama hardly disagreed with the sentiment, replying that the nation can "survive a lot." He added: "The American people don't want to just survive, we want to thrive."
Obama pointed to Romney's assertion that it is fair for a person with a $50,000-a-year income to pay a higher percentage of their earnings in taxes than someone who makes millions from investments. Romney said a low capital gains tax rate encourages economic growth and encourages people to invest.
"I've just got a different vision about how we grow our economy," Obama said, adding that such growth is faster when the middle class is doing well.
Discussing the stresses of the presidency, the first lady described her husband as having an even temperament. "He doesn't have emotional shifts; he's very steady," she said. "I'm one of the few people who can really make him mad."
Asked how, Obama joked: "By being thoroughly unreasonable."
In recalling his hardest day of the last four years, Obama cited the August 2011 downing of a Chinook helicopter by a rocket-propelled grenade in Afghanistan that killed 30 American troops. Obama later flew to Dover, Del., to pay tribute to the troops.
"It's very raw in those moments and it reminds you that freedom's not free and these families are taking enormous strain and ours troops are making enormous sacrifices," Obama said.
Asked what they will be doing in about five years, Michelle Obama said, "go on a long vacation," adding that she wants to retrace the couple's honeymoon route along California's scenic Route 1.
The president at first objected, saying there is still an election ahead, with a whole set of goals he wants to accomplish in a second term. After the presidency, Obama said, he expects to spend time working with kids.
"I love teaching. I miss teaching," he said. Still, the former law school professor said he is not sure he will return to the classroom.
Instead, he may explore the idea of going around to cities, creating mentorships and "giving young people" a sense of opportunity and possibility, Obama said.
An avid basketball player and occasional coach to his two daughters, Obama was asked what was harder, coaching girls or getting Congress to work.
"No contest," he replied. "The girls? They play like a team."

ISMAILIA, Egypt (Reuters) - An Islamist militant group based in Egypt's Sinai has claimed responsibility for a cross-border attack that killed an Israeli soldier in the restive peninsula where jihadi groups have gained a foothold.
Three gunmen were also killed in Friday's attack, which the group Ansar Bayt al-Maqdes said was in response to an anti-Islam film that has sparked worldwide protests and violence. A second Israeli soldier was wounded in the attack.
There have been at least four such cross-border raids in just over a year in the area where security lapsed after the uprising that overthrew Hosni Mubarak last year.
Egypt's army and police launched a security sweep after a raid that killed 16 Egyptian border guards in August.
In a statement on an Internet site often used by jihadi groups, Ansar Bayt al-Maqdes said it had named the operation as an "attack to discipline those insulting the beloved Prophet", a reference to the film that mocked Prophet Mohammad.
The group accused Jews of involvement in the film, but did not explain how. Though the film was made in the United States, Israel is often viewed by militants as a proxy agent for U.S. policy in the region because it is a close ally of Washington.
CNN reported that Jewish groups denied some reported allegations that there was any Jewish backing for the film.
The U.S. government has condemned the film and said it had no role in it, but said it could not act against the production because of its commitment to freedom of expression.
Many Muslims view any portrayal of the Prophet as blasphemous.
Ansar Bayt al-Maqdes, which means "supporters of the holy place", a reference to Jerusalem, pledged to carry out another operation, at an unspecified time, in revenge for what it said was the killing of a member in Sinai with the help of Israel.
It was not immediately clear what help it believed Israel had given in the death of Ibrahim Oweidah. Egyptian authorities had said his death in September was due to a landmine accident.
The group has previously claimed an attack on a pipeline delivering gas to Israel and rocket attacks targeting Israel.
