SANTA ANA (CBSLA.com) ? The Los Amigos High School baseball team is picking out $3,000 worth of equipment that is being donated by Diamond Sports and the Angels Foundation after the team?s equipment storage room was broken into over the weekend.
?A lot of these kids were devastated. They lost everything they had to play the game of baseball,? Coach Art Maltby said.
Burglars broke into the shed at Los Amigos High School,?16566 Newhope Street, and stole all of the team?s bats, gloves, balls, catcher?s equipment and a small pitching machine, officials said.
The equipment, much of it new, is estimated to be worth $3,000 to $4,000.
?It?s a tough time right now and every dollar counts and to get it taken away, and starting that much far behind, we just wanted to help out,? Dave Pherrin of Diamond Sports said.
They aren?t the only ones.
?Frank Robinson, the Executive Vice President of Major League Baseball, along with the Commissioner, called us and is donating $4,000,? Maltby said.
An attorney in Los Angeles donated $3,000, a retired couple gave $1,500 and an unemployed neighbor donated $50.
Dick?s Sporting Goods also told CBS2/KCAL9?s Joy Benedict the company is giving $100 gift cards to each player who had things stolen.
The school opened a separate account to hold the donations.
?We want to make sure all the money given is used for the baseball program,? Los Amigos High School Principle Robin Patterson said.
?I?m at a loss for words. I don?t know how to say thank you to the public for what they?ve done,? Maltby said.
